Origami Mathematics Thematic Unit

Lesson Plan

Grade: 3 to 8

Subject: Origami Mathematics

Topic: Calculating the Surface Area of a Quadrilateral Shape

___________________________________________________________

Learning Objective: Students will apply or extend a math lesson on calculating the surface area of a quadrilateral by using the information to create a poster that explains or demonstrates (in the student's own words) how they derived or calculated their results. Students will utilize Origami and/or Kirigami geometical shapes (figures, cranes, animals, stars, cubes, shapes...etc!) as poster illustrations.

Approximate time needed: 4 to 6 one hour sessions (or longer depending on how far this thematic lesson is extended).

____________________________________________________________

Procedure: (This should take several one-hour sessions) 1) Sometime after teaching a lesson on calculating the surface area of 2 and 3 dimensional objects, introduce students to Origami and Kirigami. 2) Later, review math lesson(s) on surface area, illustrating (simple) examples with accompaning calculations on chalkboard, eventualy asking students for any ideas of objects that can be used to figure out surface area... Origami will undoubtedly come up as a possibility. 3) Walk students through an example of how this can be demonstrated as a poster... with step-by-step calculations, step-by-step creation of Origami and/or Kirigami figures. 4) Set the task before students, assigning poster making small groups that have a set deadline for turning in their work.

ELL / Multi-Cultural Connections: English Language Learners will be thrilled with this activity because they will mix, communicate, and learn both basic communication language as well as academic language. Connections to other cultures can be established by students' creating Kirigami figures and or objects from other cultures.

Connections to other Curriculum:

Centers: Computer centers can be used to create more elaborate and clearer descriptions. Math centers can be used to created/calculate area for a variety of objects...Poster Making Center...etc...
